Cheyenne war feathers. The smallest feather represents strength, which the Cheyenne believed was overrated. The larger feather represents wisdom, which the Cheyenne believed was underrated. The Cheyenne sent their braves into battle with these. They would offer prayers that their children be blessed with a sufficient amount of strength, but an abundant amount of wisdom.
This tattoo was done for his sons (initials JJL and MGL above the feathers), and also pays homage to his alma mater, JJ Kelly.
